Frequently Asked Questions
How am I billed for an ambulance call?
During and after the call, the EMS provider caring for you will document how they cared for you in a program called the electronic patient care record (ePCR). Once the ePCR is generated, it is sent to a contracted billing company, who's trained staff then read the documentation and generate a claim. If you had insurance on file with the hosital, or provided it to the EMS providers, the billing company will submit the claim to your insurance first.
If you do not have insurance listed, they will contact to you find out if you do have insurance. If so, they will collect that information and then submit the claim.
If you do not have insurance, the billing company will work with you determine a payment plan. If you do not repond to attempts to contact you, your bill will be sent to collections.
How do I read my ambulance bill?
Compared to hospital bills, ambulance bills are actually quite simple!
When you are transported by ambulance, you will see two separate charges; the level of service and the mileage. Let's break these down!
The level of service is the level of care we provide to you during your experience. The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code will tell you the level of service provided.
See this list of HCPCS codes you may find and what they mean:
A0426 - Advanced Life Support (ALS), non-emergency, level 1: Care above the BLS level that may include starting an IV or giving a medication (usually from one facility to another).
A0427 - Advanced Life Support (ALS), emergency, level 1: Care above the BLS level during an emergency that may include starting an IV or giving a medication.
A0428 - Basic Life Support (BLS), non-emergency: Care and transport by an EMT (usually from one facility to another).
A0429 - Basic Life Support (BLS), emergency: Care and transport by an EMT during an emergency.
A0433 - Advanced Life Support (ALS), level 2: ALS care requiring at least 3 drugs be administered during the call for service.
A0434 - Specialty Care Transport: Critical care transport that requires specialized training such as ventilators or multiple medication drips.
HCPCS Codes will also specify mileage. When billed for mileage, you are billed for the miles (to the tenth of a mile) you are physically in the ambulance (loaded miles).
A0425 - Mileage: The mileage the patient was actually transported by.
